The Health Department performs at least one unannounced inspection of every retail food establishment in Warren annually. If the inspection results of the inspection are anything other than Satisfactory then a reinspection is performed. We also inspect based on every complaint we receive. Why do we spend so much time assuring safe foods? One of the hallmarks of public health is prevention and one of the traditional services is food inspections. By inspecting food establishments, as well as training and educating food service workers we are better able to prevent food borne illnesses and reduce the chance of food poisoning. The inspections we conduct are not just about making sure a restaurant looks clean, but we spend time making sure food is handled and prepared safely; we check temperatures to makes sure food is held, cooked, and cooled at safe temperatures, and we look for conditions that might lead to contamination of food you eat. Current estimates are that 1 in 6 individuals in the United States get sick from food annually, more than 100,000 are hospitalized, and approximately 3,000 die each year from food related illnesses. Our efforts around inspection and education are aimed at preventing these outcomes from occurring in Warren.
